What is VoIP phone service?

It’s been a long time since we needed an operator to connect a call, or had to wait minutes for a call to go through. The new revolution in phone technology is VoIP Phone Service, also known as “Voice over Internet Protocol”. This twenty-first century technology is one of the most important turning points in phone service since Alexander Graham Bell first invented the phone in 1876. A VoIP phone service allows you to send and receive phone calls over a braodband internet connection, instead of over a regular phone line.

VoIP phone service providers offer great cost-saving service plans, such as free long distance calling plans, easy installation, voicemail and other calling services, and much more.

VOIP Phone service Functionality

The technology of VoIP phone service works by converting analog voice calls into data packets, sending the packets over broadband computer connections, and transforming the call back to voice at the other end of the line.

A VOIP phone service can also allow you to use an Internet-connected computer to call any regular phone in the world. The number of VoIP phone service providers is growing rapidly throughout the United States, and even major telecommunication companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest are now beginning to offer VoIP phone services as a replacement for their soon-to-be antiquated home telephone services, and those that aren’t probably will be soon.

History of VoIP phone service

This new type of phone service started as a free service which enabled computer-to-computer calls, such as Skype, avoiding long-distance fees and taxes altogether. Companies such as Yahoo offered this service for free through their instant messaging platforms.

VoIP phone service today

Voip phone services are now generally subscription-based, with a flat monthly fee, and may also be known as “broadband phone” and “Internet phone” services. Several different equipment models – adapter, special phone, computer-to-computer – are available to suit your needs.
You must have a high speed internet connection, such as DSL or cable, as the service doesn’t work on low-speed modems — the technology is based on broadband communication. In order to provide clear voice signals, VoIP requires a speed of up to 90Kbps depending on the voice compression technology used by the provider.

Some service providers offer VoIP service in various packages for residential users, small businesses. commercial users, home office users, and large companies. Many provide infrastructure like hardware devices, soft phones, PBX, inbound and outbound termination and others.
