Looking at Cisco VoIP

Revolutionary VoIP phone service is changing the face of the phone industry. Telecommunications companies are fighting to provide this service, even  more than traditional phone services. Companies who manufacture the necessary hardware are also competing to gather a stable niche in this growing industry.

One of the many manufacturers who produce VoIP products is the famous name Cisco. Cisco VoIP products — such as switches, routers, phones, gateways, cable modems, security devices, and home networking products — are well-known and trusted within the industry

Leading the industry

Cisco’s tagline is “The Worldwide Leader in Networking for the Internet”, and it has been true from  their first product, the internet router.  Now they have brought this level of quality to their VoIP products.  Cisco VoIP provides the broadband cables that power major broadband providers, as well as DSL lines, VoIP phones, VoIP gateways, interoperability systems, and the software to make all these systems run.

Phones from Cisco VoIP

Cisco VoIP equipment and phones are not too different from standard phones.  They are a basic tool to use a VoIP system in your house. The IP phone is connected to a Cisco VoIP gateway located somewhere in or near your house. The phone is used the same way as a regular phone, with equal or superior sound quality.

When Cisco VoIP phones were first released, there were concerns about the security of the phones, since it was relatively easy for others with a phone on the same network to tap and record a phone conversation.  Also, the phone was initially vulnerable to crashes and DoS attacks. However, the Cisco VoIP technical team released improved security software to negate these vulnerabilities.

The VoIP phones have several features that a traditional phone does not, including: an information button, messages button, directory, and timers, among others. A Cisco VoIP phone looks and functions  similar to the digital phones used with TDM-based PBX systems.

Other features are available on Cisco VoIP phones if the VoIP provider is equipped to deliver them. This includes paging, call forwarding, call transfer, caller ID display, intercom features, softkeys, and conference calls.

All Cisco VoIP phone service is highly customizable according to the consumer’s needs. However, these Cisco VoIP phone generally must be installed by a service provider with the expertise to set up the hardware and the broadband cable lines.
